The artist I chose to write about and explore is Jim Fiscus. My interest in this photographer stemmed from my love of the TV show Dexter on Showtime. (Watch it, it’s really good). Jim Fiscus is an American digital photographer that does mostly editorial and commercial photography, but it’s the kind of commercial work that I consider to be art. He’s from Athens, Georgia, and was voted the Photographer of the Year for 2006.

His photographs are mostly dramatic portraits in staged scenes. His photography for the show Dexter is probably his most highly regarded campaign, and also one of my favorites.

The fact that I love the show so much could have a lot to do with why I like these images so much. I understand the characters, and Jim Fiscus captured them very well. I like the second and third images the most. In the image of the baby, Jim Fiscus somehow manipulated the baby to make a face that shadows his father’s in an almost eerie way. These photographs are from the new season which is not as dark as the prior season because a baby is introduced. Before, the pictures were dark and eerie, with Dexter usually holding a knife or covered in blood. The blood is replaced with baby food and bright vibrant colors. I also appreciate the portrait of Dexter because his grin seems friendly at first, but the longer you look at the portrait, the more you sense theres something wicked behind that grin.
